Local blog helps Richmond man recover his Pig Paint Truck

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A Richmond man says his stolen truck was recovered after a woman saw the truck and then his post on a local blog.

Sean Cannon says his Dodge Ram pick-up was stolen Friday night in the Fan. He sells barbeque sauce called "Pig Paint," and his truck is pretty recognizable.

Cannon didn't just call police, he posted the crime on Facebook and it went viral.

"I posted on Facebook and asked people to share it," Cannon said.

One of the people who shared it is John Murden, who writes for the local blog "Fan of the Fan." Katie Gantt then saw the blog post and commented on it.

Katie Gantt was spending her Tuesday morning in line at the McDonald's in Southside Plaza, when she says something caught her eye.

12 ON YOUR SIDE: Rare tick-borne meat allergy in children

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WWBT)- Parents, take extra care while your young ones are outside this summer - U.Va doctors say a tick-borne meat allergy may now affect children.

We first brought you the story about a man with a mysterious illness, an allergy that almost killed him, traced to a tick bite.

The lone star tick can cause life-threatening allergic reactions if your child is bitten and then eats a hamburger or hot dog.

U.Va researchers tested 51 children, ages four to 17, who had a history of allergic reactions - like severe itching and trouble breathing - but unknown causes. Doctors found most kids in the study had tick bites within the past year.

Martin's now Richmond's top grocery store

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- For the first time in four years, Food Lion is no longer the king of local grocery stores; Martin's now claims the top spot.

That's according to a market share study released this week by the industry publication "Food World."

Based on total sales, Martin's had nearly 17% share of the market, followed by Food Lion, which had around 15% of the market.

"I'm delighted," said long-time customer Bobby Twigs. "Martins and Ukrop's have been our favorite for years."

"I think that is great," said customer Angela Eskridge. "I've been shopping here for many, many years, and I like to see them continue good service."

VCU Marketing Director Dr. Michael Little studies these trends. He says the promotion of fresh foods and fuel perks are two big strategies he says could have helped martin's get to the top.

He also says it's all about the visual attraction.

Shockoe Bottom to roll out street cameras

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- How do you balance privacy and your safety? Richmond's public safety committee discussed rolling out cameras on city streets Monday night.

Police say the extra eyes work, but they will not say just how many cameras are already out there.

The debate is just beginning with this agenda item, but Shockoe Bottom plans to put up cameras in the very near future.

The weekend crime report in Richmond shows a busy police force. There were aggravated assaults, an abduction, and multiple robberies.

"The police can't be everywhere and neither can the citizens," said public safety chairwoman Reva Trammell.

Trammell wants to see more cameras on city streets to help fight crime.

"We need something," said Trammell. "We need a tool to help us to feel like we are being protected."

Medicaid expansion in VA now under serious review

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A hot button issue brought hundreds of demonstrators to the State Capitol on Monday. More than 200 showed up as the Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission met for the first time to review changes to the Medicaid program.

Both sides are giving their reasons for and against Medicaid expansion, but the commission said we're still in the beginning process of trying to understand that type of change.

Expansion could mean coverage for 400,000 more people in the state. Opponents say, right now, the Medicaid program is a broken system.

"The idea really is to get everybody dependent on government - somebody has got to pay for that, and I think a lot of it is going to be waste," said Senator Dick Black with District 13, who is against Medicaid expansion.

Across the Capitol grounds, a smaller group in favor of the expansion gathered. These demonstrators believe it will provide much needed health care for the uninsured.
