Businessman goes on trial for insurance fraud

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Texas businessman accused of defrauding hundreds of investors out of more than $100 million is going on trial Tuesday in Richmond.

Adley Abdulwahab faces charges of wire fraud, securities fraud and money laundering.

Abdulwahab was one of the principals in companies that bought life insurance policies from insured people at less than face value, then collected the benefits when those people died.

Five others related to the case have pleaded guilty, and one was convicted by a jury.

Changes coming to riverfront

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - There could be some changes coming to a popular fishing spot in Richmond. The city wants to spend nearly a million dollars to clean up the Intermediate Terminal site east of downtown.

The city is looking at adding a wooden dock and possibly pave the way for a restaurant overlooking the James.

Nearby fishermen have mixed reactions. Some don't want anything that will ruin their quiet fishing spot, but most say they'd welcome any development:

The site itself isn't much to look at - weeds growing in the cracks of the concrete and a large vacant building - but the view from this neglected site is much more attractive.

Frank Oliver grew up in Richmond and is back in town, visiting from Dallas. He said this popular fishing spot brings back a lot of memories.

"I used to play down here," Oliver said. "We used to come down and fish and do all the things in our younger years, and play hooky sometimes."

13 agencies start Richmond Crime Sweep

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – You've been warned! That's the new message from police and prosecutors to criminals. 13 agencies have started a new campaign in a joint effort to sweep crime from Richmond.

Richmond's "Crime Sweep" ads will soon be flashing on city bill boards, and hitting your TV's.

"We're just trying to create a scenario where crime is not something that pays," said Mayor Dwight Jones.

Local and state police are teaming up with the FBI, ATF, and state and federal prosecutors to go after the drug dealers, the robbery suspects, and anyone using guns to commit violent on Richmond's streets.

"The word is out to criminals and their associates that these 13 agencies are looking for them and we will find, and put them behind bars," said Neil MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District.
