The film will star Academy Award-winning actors Daniel Day-Lewis (My Left Foot, There Will be Blood) as Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field (Norma Rae, Places in the Heart) as Mary Todd Lincoln.  The screenplay was written by Tony Kushner who last worked with Spielberg on the feature film Munich.  The film will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg for DreamWorks Studios.

Only one homicide in City's East End this year

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – We've uncovered some good news for a notoriously violent part of the city. In the first four months of the year, Richmond's East End saw only one homicide. A decade ago, that number would have been much higher.

You may remember Gary Green, the beloved Short Pump Martin's employee who was shot during a robbery in Mosby Court. He died three days later.

Since then it has been quiet. Green's is the only homicide East End detectives have had to investigate.

That number set a new record. The previous low was back in 2009 when there were four homicides in the first four months of the year.

We did the math and we're now closing in on 100 days without a murder there.

"I think that's great," exclaimed Alice Harris.

3 Contractors to dig up asphalt on slave burial ground for free

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond is moving forward with plans to get rid of a VCU parking lot believed to built on a slave burial ground.

Wednesday the mayor announced three local contractors are joining together to help remove the asphalt. Decades of gravel and tar and repaving, will soon be dug up.

"The 3.4 acre parcel is believed to be among the nation's oldest municipal cemetery's for enslaved and freed blacks," said Mayor Dwight Jones.

And it's been the center of debate, protest and court battle for years. VCU parks 340 cars here daily. The university has agreed to turn the property over to the state for 3 million dollars. The state will give it to the city. Mayor Dwight Jones announced today three local contractors will work for free, tearing up what the NAACP has called a desecration.

New program to educate people about cancer prevention

The Massey Alliance invites the community to learn how a healthy lifestyle can reduce risk for cancer while enjoying the local, seasonal offerings and urban atmosphere of the 17th Street Farmers’ Market.  Through free community exercise classes and nutrition information provided by trained volunteers, the organization’s new community outreach program will emphasize the important role a healthy lifestyle plays in reducing risk for cancer.

The Massey Alliance is a junior board of young professionals dedicated to raising money and awareness for VCU Massey Cancer Center.  The group has recently embraced a mission of educating their peers about the growing scientific evidence that a commitment to a healthy lifestyle from a young age has a significant impact on cancer risk later in life.  Utilizing the vibrant, interactive venue of the 17th Street Farmers’ Market, the initiative kicks off on the opening day of the market, Saturday, May 7, and will run through September 10.  Important cancer prevention information will be shared in two ways:
