Church Hill homes to get a major makeover

RICHMOND, VA. (WWBT) - Dozens of homes in the Peter Paul area of Church Hill will see a major make over on Saturday. More than  1,500 volunteers will be in the neighborhood to fix all types of problems.

Melvin Washington is a U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam. But that's not where his struggles began. He was shot at work back in 1970. "I'm a spinal cord patient. I still have a bullet in my back and at times I can't walk."

He's confined to a wheelchair. But not just one wheelchair. He has several. "It's very hard because I can't get my wheelchair through here. It's not wide enough."

So that's where Amy King and her team at Rebuilding Together Richmond stepped in.

Where are you most likely to get a parking ticket in Richmond?

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Where are you most likely to get a parking ticket in Richmond? Last year, the city ticketed more than 128,000 vehicles.

According to our research, this is parking enforcement's favorite place to write tickets... downtown near City Hall and the MCV Campus. You are more likely to get a ticket here than anywhere else in the city.

Time is the enemy when finding a spot for your car in Richmond's downtown.

"I was really, really hot that 40 dollars is getting on my nerves. You hear me. They need to stop it," added Shandi Davis-Taylor.

"I have not but my daughter got one in my car. I just found out about it last week. 70 dollars!!!! Ok," said Kim Allison.

Parking enforcement will get you if you're in a loading zone too long, don't feed the meter or parked illegally.

Last year the city raked in $4.3 million from parking tickets.

Judge denies ACLU bid for parade fee waiver

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Federal judge denied an ACLU bid today to waive a fee for a Richmond parade.

Organizers wanted to throw a parade around Monroe Park this Sunday for May Day.

Police denied the parade permit unless the group paid $294 for off-duty officers to serve as escorts.

In his ruling, Henry Hudson wrote, that the group failed to show Richmond Police denied the parade permit based on anything other than reasonable public safety concerns.

Early morning accident on I-95 causing delays

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle tractor-trailer crash on I-95 South, just north of Belvidere Street.

The accident happened shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday.

The driver of the tractor-trailer ran off the left side of the roadway, striking the jersey wall. The driver's side fuel tank ruptured, spilling 25 to 40 gallons of diesel fuel.

The driver suffered minor injuries  from a medical condition and was transported to VCU Medical Center. The tractor-trailer was loaded with approximately 15,000 pounds of copper.

Clean up crews had to deal with several problems. Along with the fuel that leaked onto the road, crews had to empty all of the remaining diesel into huge tanks, before removing the truck from the road.

It took about 3 hours to finish the clean up. Around 9 this morning, all three lanes of the road re-opened.

5 of 6 arrested after VCU riot appear in court

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Some VCU fans got a little rowdy after the team's loss in the Final Four.

Six people were arrested during the chaos afterward and today several of them faced a judge for the first time.

Dozens of people were detained but only six were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Today those facing charges from that night say they were just at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

VCU's improbable run to the Final Four ended with a bang after police used tear gas to disperse rowdy fans.

After the smoke cleared, six people were arrested, including Joel Torreyson and Tom Paxman.

Neither one of them are VCU students but drove from Northern Virginia to watch the game with a friend.

They left Richmond with disorderly conduct charges.
