Saturday was Paralympic Experience Day.  Sponsored by Sportable, and attended by Polly Franks-Sweeney, Special Advisor to the Governor on Disability Issues, Emily McGrail, Miss Wheelchair Virginia 2011, and Anjali Forber Pratt, elite wheelchair racer, Paralympic ambassador and graduate student at the University of Illinois, disabled athletes from the Richmond area were invited to try out Paralympic events.

Police use tear gas and rubber bullets on rowdy fans

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State, City of Richmond and VCU police officers used tear gas to get control of rowdy fans after VCU's loss to Butler University.

By 11 p.m. the crowd had largely dispersed. Earlier, the scene was chaotic.

It all began on West Broad Street where students started small fires. Police in riot gear herded fans to Monroe Park using tear gas and rubber bullets.

At one point, a student threw a gas canister back at police.

Richmond police said six people were arrested for disorderly conduct.

VCU fans focus on positive after disappointing Final Four Loss

HOUSTON TX (WWBT) - The fans that made the trip to Houston were so invested in this team on a personal and physical level. Many spent hundreds of dollars and countless hours to get here. Despite the outcome, not one of them would have done things differently.

As the final buzzer sounded, and this team- who at one point had unending energy, slowly walked off the court, hundreds of die- hard VCU fans were right there to support them. Like they had from day one.

"They are amazing, they mean everything to our school," said Lorena Salom, a graduate student from VCU  "We are so proud of them. We are very happy."

Even though they said they were happy, it was clear this loss hit many hard. Fans that screamed for all 40 minutes of the semi-final game, were left with solemn faces and heavy hearts.

"It hurts, but we still made it here, we still get a big banner at Seigel in our home gym," said Daniel Nassif.

Students jam Siegel Center for VCU watch party

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – VCU students have jammed the Siegel Center to watch the Rams take on Butler.

The university is hosting a viewing party for up to 3500 students, faculty, and staff. It was not immediately clear how many people attended, but the crowd was able to fill the east end zone of the arena.

Almost everybody arrived wearing a VCU black or gold t-shirt. They also received a free shirt upon entering, courtesy of the school.

Watching the game on a projection screen, students said it felt like being at a rock concert.

"I think it's the best thing to ever happen in school. I'm so honored to be here," said freshman Abby Weddell, who added, "I think we're gonna win. No doubt about it."

"I think it's tight man, I think it's live, and I'm loving it," said student Ryan Edwards.

Mimi Baker said, "We're gonna win, baby! Number one, baby! NUMBER ONE!"
