Defense attorney speaks after Shamrock the Block brawl charges are dropped

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A Richmond judge dismissed all charges against a Colonial Heights man charged in a brawl with police at Shamrock the Block.

Video of the fight went viral, causing some to question whether police were too rough with Jason Dotson. However, Dotson was the one who ended up charged. He initially faced a charge of drunk in public and was later charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer.

MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Score rewards with good grades

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- The last report cards of the year will be coming home soon, and parents aren't the only ones who like to reward their kids for good grades. You can use those A's and B's to score hot deals at businesses all over town.

Liz Costello created CompletelyKidsRichmond.com as a resource for parents, and she's got the freebie honor roll!

"They know how hard kids are working, and they want them to understand how much their grades will mean going forward and how important it is to learn," said Costello.

At the Krispy Kreme store, an 'A' equals a doughnut. Children in sixth grade or younger can receive up to a half a dozen free.

Bowl America's "rolling rewards" gives your child one free game of bowling for every 'A' or 'B' earned on the final report card.

RGIII "without a doubt" ready for Richmond training camp

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- When the Washington Redskins head to Richmond for training camp in July, RGIII says he will be on the field.

"Without a doubt," said quarterback Robert Griffin III, when asked if he would be under the center on Day 1. "It's a mindset and how I've progressed. I feel a lot better. Training camp is two months away, and I feel good about that."

Head Coach Mike Shanahan was cautious, but optimistic.

"We'll have to wait and see," said Shanahan. "I like that goal."

RGIII is recovering from a partially torn ACL in his right knee. He had the surgery a few days after re-injuring his knee in a playoff game last season with the Seattle Seahawks - he initially injured it back in 2009.

The Redskins start their inaugural training camp at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center on July 25. The camp will last for 17 days and will be open to the public.

Shockoe Bottom market, train shed construction could mean headaches

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- Get ready for some major traffic headaches in Richmond's Shockoe Bottom.

Never mind where to put the Flying Squirrels Baseball stadium. Plans are already moving forward to transform Shockoe Bottom's train shed and the 17th Street Farmer's Market.

"I've been wondering which project might sort of take me out to the end of my career," said architect Will Scribner. "It seems like this might be it."

Scribner says the plan to restore the shed and enclose it in glass has been eight years in the making.

"It is really happening now," said Scribner. "The funding is coming together in its final form. The bids have been received from contractors."

The train shed dates back to 1904. It is a national historic landmark and makes quite the statement along the interstate.

On Your Side Alert: Foreign lottery scams target seniors

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A warning from the United States Postal Inspection Service says there's been an increase in the number of seniors victimized by foreign lottery scams.

U.S. Postal Inspector David McGinnis says mail fraud is a constant problem. He says one of the leading complaints are foreign lottery offers. Sometimes the crooks won't take no for an answer.

"If the person resists, they have actually threatened people. They have gone on to Google Maps and looked at their house and when they call them, they say, 'Look, I know your house is a yellow house and there is a black truck parked in the driveway,'" McGinnis explains.

He says many of these lottery scams originate in Jamaica. Usually, when you are dealing with foreign lotteries, it's difficult to make an arrest but McGinnis says the Jamaican government is cooperating with U.S. authorities.

Mom accused of putting baby in dumpster cries in court

ShaVaughn Robinson (Source: Richmond Police Dept.)

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- There are more charges for a Richmond mother accused of leaving her baby in a dumpster.

On Wednesday, a grand jury indicted ShaVaughn Robinson on first degree murder.  At her bond appeal, a judge also ordered her to stay in jail. When he said that, she started to cry.

Lawyers say Robinson could be arraigned on the murder charge Thursday. There's also the possibility that she could be appointed a new lawyer with this new charge.

At every court appearance so far, Robinson's family has been there. Her mother, grandmother and brother were there on Wednesday but did not want to talk about the case. They are still coming to grips with the fact that Robinson is accused of leaving her newborn baby girl in a dumpster off Monument Avenue.

New center helping women's businesses grow

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- In Virginia, women are starting new businesses 1.5 times more often then men, according to the Small Business Administration. That's why the SBA just opened the Center for Women's Enterprise, to help women grow their companies and overcome challenges.

Growing a business can be like running an obstacle course.

Cindy Briggs is the owner of All Dog Adventures, a dog boarding and training facility. She wants to build a new, bigger dogplex, where she can eventually triple the business and staff.

"I've had this vision of a dogplex that has everything in it," she told us.

Briggs' obstacle was getting the capital, a loan, to build it and didn't know where to turn. "I would be discouraged because there wasn't anybody there to answer my questions."

But now the SBA'S Center for Women's Enterprise is helping her qualify for a loan.
