On Valentine's Day we celebrate romance, love, and loyalty. These concepts extend past the human species. In fact you may be surprised at the animals who mate for life. Check this video and we, at the Science Museum of Virginia, wish you wonderful Valentine's Day!

Hilton Garden Inn Richmond goes "greener"

Some 2,000 pounds of food waste each month will no longer be sent to local land fills, thanks to a New Year’s resolution to “Go Greener” by Hilton Garden Inn Richmond Downtown in the restored Miller & Rhoads building.

“While we are proud to be a participant in the Virginia Green program, we wanted to expand our efforts by adding composting in 2011,” said John Cario, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn Richmond Downtown. Virginia Green, the state’s program to encourage green practices in tourism, has nearly 1000 participants, including more than 400 lodging facilities.

“To be the very first hotel in the region to compost food wastes is an exciting step forward,” said Tom Griffin of RVA Green Management Services, the hotel’s partner in developing the compost program. “This is a clear indication of how committed the management and staff of the Hilton Garden Inn are to its new ‘Green Program’ and its goals to reduce waste,” Griffin added.

Celebrate Valentine's Day with a walk in the park

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities invites you to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a tour of the Heron Rookery in the James River Park.

“The courtship behavior of the Great Blue Herons can be eerily similar to that of humans,” says Ralph White, the park’s manager.

The guided tour will take place Saturday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants are advised to dress for the weather, and although some spotting scopes will be available, bring binoculars if they have them. Cameras can also be used.

The cost of the tour is $5 for adults and $1 for children 12 and younger. Special parking for this event is available in the Whitewater Boater’s Lot next to the Floodwall on the northeast side of the 14th Street Bridge where the group will meet.
