Game On for local FIRST Robotics Team

Game On for local FIRST Robotics Team

Members of the “Blue Devils” robotics team from Hopewell High School picked up robot components and learned their mission for the 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition on Saturday, January 5.  Gathering at the Virginia Commonwealth University Student Commons, teams from across Virginia heard they'll have just six weeks to design and build remote-controlled robots that can fling Frisbee-type discs through goals and climb 10-foot pyramids.  Students in FIRST programs not only compete for bragging rights in the international contest; they also qualify for more than $16 million in college scholarships.  Learn more at www.virginiafirst.org

Get your health on track in 2013 with "Get To Goal Richmond"

At least 350 people will be recruited for a free four month pilot blood pressure program called Get To Goal Richmond.  Participants will learn how to lower and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. There are approximately 76 million, or one in three, Americans with high blood pressure, or hypertension. African-Americans have the highest rates of hypertension in the world and millions are unaware of the problem.

Celebrating the All-American Dog this Independence Day

Celebrating the All-American Dog this Independence Day

The Richmond Animal League is celebrating the "All-American dog" this Independence Day--the mighty mutt! Visit the Richmond Animal League the week of July 1 through July 7 and learn some more about a few very special mixed breed pups, and enjoy a reduced adoption fee on those dogs participating in the event.

There are plenty of reasons to consider going for a mixed breed pup rather than a purebred when thinking about adding a new furry member to your family--mixed breed dogs can be healthier and more intelligent than purebred dogs, and you'll get the added benefit of a dog who's totally unique in looks and personality!

The Richmond Animal League is open to the public for adoptions from 4:30 to 8:00pm Tuesday through Friday, and 12:00 to 4:00pm Saturday and Sunday. Find out more about them on their website, www.ral.org, or email adopt@ral.org for more information.

Wilbur, the Unlikely Internet Celebrity

Wilbur, the Unlikely Internet Celebrity

Wilbur is an unlikely internet celebrity.

Picked up by Caroline Animal Control, Wilbur and a canine buddy entered the shelter severely underweight. So skinny in fact, that Wilbur managed to slip out of his collar and escape the folks who were trying to save him. He made his way back to the shelter, however, and sat outside of his buddy’s kennel. Wilbur had decided that the people at Caroline Animal Control weren’t so bad after all.

Enter the Richmond Animal League. Specifically, Board President Sharon Cornett and long-time RAL volunteer Carolyn Turner. When Carolyn shared Wilbur’s picture with her, Sharon knew that Wilbur would be coming to RAL. Wilbur’s picture hit RAL’s Facebook page and went viral.
