Goodwill wants VCU students to donate items
News

Moving is not always an easy process, especially when you're a college student.  Every year tons of reusable items are thrown away.

Now Goodwill is partnering up with the Fan District Association to make it easier for VCU students on moving day.

Many VCU students have about two weeks until they have to move out. Goodwill says instead of throwing their things away, they should donate it.

The alleys look empty now but when moving day comes it will looking something like this: dumpsters full of items students can't take with them.

Neighbors say it piles up and clutters the street.

For many students like Kelly Powers, it's a stressful process.

"It probably takes me about three weeks to pack and clean, and then another two weeks to make moves," she said.

But as students move out of the fan neighborhood, Goodwill says it's going to move in with a donation center.

Organizers hope it will help with keeping some of the clutter out of the landfill.

Here are some of the items Goodwill will take:

  • Clothing, shoes
  • Accessories (purses, scarves)
  • Furniture in good condition
  • Computers, printers, monitors
  • Domestics (sheets, towels)
  • Working TVs under 32"
  • Books, DVDs, CDs, records
  • Small working appliances

Powers says she has two boxes full of clothes she's ready to give away.

"Some people aren't as well off as you so donating anything you can, helping out as much as you can is always a good thing for your community," she said.

The donation center will be right behind the Academic Center on North Ryland Street starting Friday, May 18 to May 20. It goes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
