Police continue to investigate double shooting

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a double shooting in south Richmond.

The two men were shot near a motel on Jeff Davis Highway. Detectives and SWAT team units surrounded a nearby motel just a block away from the shooting. Police say the victims called police from a BP down the street from the motel.

"It's bad," said one neighbor. "Crime, crime, crime. They need to get these guns off the street."

Officers say someone shot the men while trying to rob them around 9:45 Wednesday night. It was just an hour before the gas station closed for the night. The shooting is an unsettling thought for one neighbor who did not want to go on camera.

"Because it's bad. We can't even walk the sidewalk safely to get to work in the morning and to get home at night time."

State delays funding vote on city jail

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Plans for the new city jail may soon go back to the drawing board, after news of a recent funding snag.

The State Board of Corrections met and decided to delay a vote that would reimburse the city for part of the cost of building the new jail.

The Times-Dispatch reports the board is concerned about the size of the cells being too small for the bunk beds. It also questioned if there were enough beds in the plan to address overcrowding.

The board did approve other aspects of the plan.

Police: one arrested, one wanted for Shockoe Slip thefts

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – There's some good news if you go to Shockoe Slip restaurants and bars. Richmond Police have brought charges against two men they said could be responsible for multiple wallet and credit card thefts NBC12 told you about last month. One is behind bars tonight, the other on the run.

It was pretty easy for anybody to understand Brittany Akers' aggravation when she told us how an October Saturday night in Shockoe Slip had been ruined by a thief's sticky fingers.

"I had tons of fun," she said. "I had a great time until I figured out the next morning that somebody had jacked my wallet, my money, my life out of my purse."

That alleged crook's spree with Akers' credit card came to an end Saturday night, oddly at the same place it started; thanks to the watchful eye of an employee at Europa.

More vandalism prompts community meeting with police

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - People in one Richmond neighborhood say they want peace and order restored after vandals struck yet again. We first told you about the problem this summer when one woman had to replace her car window, twice in just days.

People in the Eastview neighborhood are tired of spending hundreds of dollars to replace tires and windows. They want a vandalism spree to come to a halt.

All is not quiet in Eastview.

"No, the biggest concern is waking up in the morning not knowing if your window is broke or your tire's flat," said Shavonda Jackson.

Jackson said she witnessed vandals take aim at her neighbor's car window on Hildreth Street last Saturday.

"Some guys just walked down the street and broke the man's car window and just ran away," said Jackson.

She had to shell out money this summer when someone targeted her front storm door.

VCU Police officer arrested, suspended on pornography charges

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A VCU police officer is on suspension after being charged with distributing child pornography.

35-year-old James Deford was arrested and taken into custody early Tuesday by Richmond police and the FBI.

Students on campus are stunned to hear about these charges.  They say this is humiliating and shameful for everyone involved.

James Deford spoke with NBC12 in his VCU police uniform last year about laptop safety.  Now, he's on the other side of the law and is facing two felony charges of distribution of child pornography. Students say Deford's arrest makes them reevaluate who's keeping them safe on campus.

"This is like shocking.  I have young nieces and nephews and I want them to feel safe if I want to bring them here.  Now it's just like, oh is this a safe campus," said Precious Lewis, a VCU sophomore.
