McDonnell vetoes P.E. bill, sparking debate

By: Nicolas Nightingale

In late March, Gov. Bob McDonnell vetoed a bill (SB 966) that would require schools to have at least 150 minutes of physical education instruction per week for elementary and middle school students.  The governor called the bill “an unfunded mandate” and claimed it would cost millions of dollars to carry out, in addition to take away time from other subjects.

Much debate sparked from the governor’s decision.  With childhood obesity on the rise everyday, many feel that vetoing a bill like this will only increase the unhealthy eating habits and poor exercise regimens in children.

General Assembly back in session today

Lawmakers will head back to Richmond Wednesday to kick off this year's General Assembly session. It's going to be a busy few weeks -- hundreds of bills will be discussed.

This session is only 46 days, but in those 46 days, we could learn the fate of those ABC stores. We're tracking the latest, revised plan that Governor Bob McDonnell is pushing for, centering on the state's ABC stores. This new plan could triple the number of places to buy booze in the state and generate more money for the state.

Also on the agenda a bill that would stop you from finding out how much a public employee or official makes in the state.

Keeping with tradition, Governor Bob McDonnell will deliver his State of the Commonwealth address Wednesday night at 7pm.
