Renderings of 'Foundry Park Bridge' to Brown's Island

The project to install a new pedestrian bridge over the Haxall Canal to Brown’s Island from the intersection of 5th and Tredegar streets is more than a month from completion, but renderings of the bridge have now been made available.

The official name of the bridge is the Foundry Park Bridge, according to Sharon R. North, public information manager for the Department of Public Works. The prefabricated bridge should arrive by the end of August.

It will be the second bridge over the canal to the east end of the island, in addition to the access at the far west end of the island. The bridge will connect to a walking path just west of the “Headman” statue.

A Place for Contemplation

A Place for Contemplation

Need an escape from the noise and confusion of city living?  There’s a little known place tucked away in the Biotech Park that offers a quiet and safe place to think about the world and get some perspective. Attached to UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) is a beautifully designed park, The National Donor Memorial, a tribute to organ donors and their families.  It sits at the entrance to UNOS and is not easy to spot from the street, but there are detailed driving instructions at the memorial website and UNOS provides free parking.  For Jackson Ward residents and Biotech Park workers it is an easy walk.  The memorial is open 7 days a week, morning and evening hours.

By Phillip Newsome

If you have either lived, walked, or driven around Richmond, it’s very likely you have run into a parking ticket. The city of Richmond has recently been cracking down on public parking.

Last year, the city ticketed more than 128,000 vehicles. People like Tara Mason, who commute into Richmond daily, believe this only adds to an already stressful commute.

Controversy arises with plans to renovate Monroe Park

Along with a new jail and plans to expand city roads, Mayor Dwight Jones also has serious renovation plans for Monroe Park.

There has been talk for a few years now about plans to renovate Monroe Park and to make it more inviting. Many people use the park for sports, leisure time and school activities. But for the homeless, it’s place to spend their daylight hours.

Local homeless man Bill Hill believes that the park will never actually be closed for any reason; he says “They keep talking about it but I don’t see them doing it because there are just too many homeless people. Where are they going to go?”

Redistricting discussion to be held

Richmond City Council has scheduled an additional meeting to discuss four initial draft alternative 2011 Richmond Decennial Voter District Redistricting plans. Proposed maps will assist Council in determining Richmond Voter District boundaries as part of the 2011 Richmond Decennial Voter District Redistricting process.

It is important to know that these four plans are preliminary draft alternatives and a final draft plan is still to be determined. The final draft plan, which will be presented during public hearings be held across the city in June (schedule below), may be very different from the four initial draft alternative plans being reviewed.

This is part of the ongoing open public process in which Richmond City Council is working to adopt a new 2011 Richmond Decennial Voter District Redistricting plan, which will be used as new Richmond Voter District boundaries for the next 10 years, by December 31, 2011.

The initial draft preliminary alternative plans (attached) are based on the 2010 Census population figures for the City of Richmond (available from U.S. Census website, at www.census.gov). Criteria being used to evaluate the proposals include the following (the first five of which are mandatory):
