Project Kids Chef’ continues at Chimborazo

Fifth-grade students at Richmond’s Chimborazo Elementary School have discovered that healthy food can also taste good thanks to “Project Kids Chef,” a nutrition and cooking demonstration program that features partnerships with local restaurants and the Farm to Family “mobile veggie bus.”  Already this year, students have witnessed Jim Hamilton, chef at Millie’s Diner, purchase ingredients from the bus and then prepare a meal of pasta with fresh vegetables, garlic and Parmesan cheese.  Other restaurants scheduled to give cooking demonstrations at the school include The Hill Café, Sette and Patrick Henry’s Pub and Grille.

“The goal of the project is to bring nutrition home to children in an enjoyable way,” said Jessica Framme Smith, Communities in Schools site coordinator at Chimborazo.  “The program seeks to encourage healthy eating, making healthy choices and to promote the pleasure of food preparation.”

Boom Boom Burgers to Open in Shockoe Bottom

DOWNTOWN -- Boom Boom Burgers will be opening their very first location in Shockoe Bottom, in what used to be Papa Nigo, a Dominican restaurant.

Located at 1703 E. Franklin Street, the new restaurant began demolition and construction in early November. As their website proudly states, Boom Boom Burgers will be “the first burger joint in the Mid-Atlantic to source 100% of our ingredients from local suppliers.”

Boom Boom Burgers will also strive to employ local workers in other facets of the restaurant as well.

According to their website, Boom Boom will “also support local businesses and that’s why when you ask what Realtor, web designer, or illustrator I used, it won’t be some minion at a giant multinational corporation.”
