RPS Will Hold Annual Science Extravaganza
March 29 and 30 at Science Museum of Virginia

The public is invited to view projects by some of the city’s brightest students at this year’s Richmond Public Schools Annual Science Extravaganza scheduled for March 29 and 30 at the Science Museum of Virginia.

    The exhibit will feature projects completed by students from all grade levels in the areas of life science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, earth science, human anatomy and physiology.  The public may view the displays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 29 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

These Men Can Read

The Richmond Public Schools Early Head Start/Head Start programs and 100 men will participate in the MAN UP (Men Assisting & Nurturing to provide Unlimited Possibilities) program.

The “These Men Can Read” project celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday and also recognizes March as National Reading Month.  The program’s goal is to have males emphasize the importance of reading by having them read Dr. Seuss classics like “Cat in the Hat,” “Fox in Socks,” “Hop on Pop” and  “Green Eggs and Ham” to students.

It takes place from March 1-4 between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Early Head Start/Head Start classes at Bellevue, Bellemeade, Blackwell, Broad Rock, Carver, Maymont, Miles Jones, Oak Grove, Overby-Sheppard and other classroom sites in Richmond Public Schools.

City Schools To Celebrate Youth Arts Month

City schools will celebrate Youth Arts Month
with exhibits and performances

 March is Youth Arts Month, and Richmond Public Schools will celebrate the event with a number of exhibits and performances featuring Richmond City students.

 Exhibits of original artwork by Richmond City students will run at all branches of the Richmond Public Library.  On March 3, opening receptions will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Broad Rock, East End, Ginter Park, North Avenue, West End and Westover Hills library branches.  An opening reception will be held March 4 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ian Fraser, a seventh-grader at Lucille Brown Middle School, is the 2011 Richmond Public Schools Spelling Bee champion.  Fraser captured the title at the district-wide competition held last month at Mary Munford Elementary School.

This year’s title marks the second time that Fraser has captured the district’s spelling bee.  He also placed first in 2009.

More than 800 students competed for the title, with 36 advancing to the final rounds of competition held at Munford.  Fraser, 13, correctly spelled the word “omnipotent” to win this year’s bee.

Fraser will now compete at the Central Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for March 5 at 1 p.m. at the Library of Virginia.

Rianne Alter, an eighth-grader at Henderson Middle School, placed second at this year’s event.

State of the Schools address on Feb 10

The 4th Annual State of the Schools address will be delivered by School Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. at Henderson Middle School, 4319 Old Brook Rd.

Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon will review the district’s recent accomplishments, recognize award-winning staff and schools, announce new initiatives and outline the district’s goals and challenges.

Citywide Spelling Bee tonight!

Approximately 35 Richmond City elementary and middle school students will participate in Richmond Public Schools 2011 Citywide Spelling Bee. It's tonight, January 25 at 6 p.m. at Mary Munford Elementary School, 211 Westmoreland Avenue.

Middle School Students Win District And Regional Music Honors

Twelve Richmond City middle school students have been selected to this year’s All-District Middle School Band and/or Central Regional Orchestra.

Four students from Brown Middle School were recognized.  Joshua Hemenway and Madeline May, both flute players, were named to the All-District Middle School Band.  Emily Lehman-Rios and Isabelle Tobe were selected for the Central Regional Orchestra.  Lehman-Rios plays the violin; Tobe plays the cello.

Also named to the All-District Band were Thompson Middle School students Timothy Lacey and Douglas Smith.  Lacey plays the snare drum and Smith is a clarinetist.
