Shaka Smart to throw out first pitch

Shaka Smart will throw out the first pitch tonight when VCU takes on top-ranked UVA.

The Rams meet the NCAA's top-ranked team for the second consecutive season and fourth time in program history.  VCU concludes its five-game home stand Wednesday, May 4 against Norfolk State at 5 p.m., before hitting the road for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Towson, May 6-7.  The Rams return home to face cross-town rival University of Richmond May 10.

BroomBall!

BroomBall!

I learned something recently – Richmond has several Broomball teams, and Broomball is not played with a broom, at least not a broom in the traditional sense.

Broomball is a recreational ice game which originated in Canada and is played around the world.  It can be played either indoors or out in a hockey rink, which means in Richmond it is played indoors.  Players do not wear ice skates.  Rather, they wear rubber-soled shoes to slide around the ice.

City hosting Hoopstown Celebration for VCU, UR

Mayor Dwight C. Jones is asking Richmonders and fans of both Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond to come out and show thanks and support at a city-wide Hoopstown Celebration for both school’s basketball programs. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 12 at 4 p.m. downtown at the James Center on Cary Street.

Acknowledging that both teams have had a tremendous season - with VCU's historical advancement to the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the city of Richmond now being among the historical few that have had two teams from one city participate in the NCAA Sweet 16 – Mayor Jones said, “the city needs an opportunity to let both teams know just how proud we are of them. We just want to thank them for the incredible journey they’ve taken the city on in the past few weeks.”

The VCU Rams made history this season with the program’s first-ever Final Four appearance.

San Antonio basketball floor coming home

SportsQuest is is bringing the portable basketball floor in San Antonio where UofR played in the Sweet Sixteen and VCU the Elite Eight played home to Richmond.

That court was the stage that launched VCU into the Final Floor and national spotlight with their stunning upsets of Florida State and Kansas.

It was also the court where UofR and VCU stood side-by-side for the sweet sixteen bringing the title of Hoopstown USA to the City of Richmond.

SportsQuest is working closely with UofR and VCU leadership to present commemorative sections of the floor for permanent display at the respective homes for their basketball programs, the Robins Center and Siegel Center.

Additional details are in the attached release including insightful comments from CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager, Academy President, Tony Tucker, and National Sales Manager for Connor Sport Flooring.

Disabled Athletes Get A Taste of the Paralympic Experience

Disabled Athletes Get A Taste of the Paralympic Experience

Saturday was a day for athletes in Richmond.  More than 40, 000 people ran in the Monument Avenue 10K, and the VCU-Butler game was probably watched by most of Richmond, but tucked away in Sports Backers Stadium off Boulevard were other athletes, athletes whose accomplishments often avoid notice.

Saturday was Paralympic Experience Day.  Sponsored by Sportable, and attended by Polly Franks-Sweeney, Special Advisor to the Governor on Disability Issues, Emily McGrail, Miss Wheelchair Virginia 2011, and Anjali Forber Pratt, elite wheelchair racer, Paralympic ambassador and graduate student at the University of Illinois, disabled athletes from the Richmond area were invited to try out Paralympic events.
