Traffic alert: I-95 Lane Closures tonight

There will be alternating dual lane closures on I-95 north and south between Belvidere Street/Route 1/Route 301 (mile marker 76) and Boulevard/Route 161 (mile marker 78) from 8 p.m. August 20 through 10 a.m. August 21 for paving. Drivers will merge to one lane both northbound and southbound.

Expect major delays on I-95 through downtown Richmond and potential backups on I-64 west at the I-95 interchange (mile marker 190) and I-64 east at the I-95/I-195 Bryan Park interchange (mile marker 187). Richmond thru travelers are strongly advised to use I-295 to bypass the road work. Local traffic is encouraged to use Route 1/301 or I-195/Downtown Expressway (toll) to avoid I-95.

Traffic alert: Street Closure

A traffic alert for drivers in the Downtown area: The intersection of North 8th Street and Duval Street will be closed on Friday, August 19 through Saturday, September 3.

This area will be closed due to construction and intersection improvements for the Duval Street Realignment project.  The J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College parking deck will be accessible from 8th Street. Both the 8th Street and Duval Street entrances to the Virginia Commonwealth University parking deck will remain open.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Commuters to I-95N/I-64W are encouraged to use the 3rd Street on-ramp; commuters to I-95S are encouraged to use the Broad Street interchange.

Part of East Grace Street will be closed through Sunday

A traffic alert for drivers in the downtown area: East Grace Street between 7th Street and 8th Street will be closed from Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26, 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.

This area of East Grace Street between 7th Street and 8th Street will be closed during installation of an HVAC unit at 703 E. Grace Street.

I-64 bridge to undergo $7.8M in repairs

The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved three contracts last week with a total value of $41.8 million for Richmond District construction and maintenance, including the Interstate 64 Shockoe Valley Bridge.

Corman Construction, Inc. of Annapolis Junction, MD was awarded a $7.8 million contract to rehabilitate the I-64 bridge over the CSX railroad and Shockoe Creek in downtown Richmond. The bridge, like many other structures throughout Virginia, has reached its maintenance life of approximately 40 years. The project will require at least one lane and shoulder closure. Traffic alert: Ramp Closure

Beginning Monday, June 20 through Friday, July 15, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. overnight  the City of Richmond Department of Public Works will be closing the ramp located at 14th and Dock Streets for blasting and re-coating of the substructures of the overhead bridge.  Traffic signs will be visible to alert motorists of the construction.

Minimal to no traffic disruptions are expected since work is taking place overnight.

Traffic alert: Street Closure

A traffic alert for drivers in the Downtown area. North 8th Street at East Duval Street will be closed from Monday, June 20 through Friday, July 1.

The street will be closed during installation of underground utilities and road grading.  East Duval Street will remain open. Those who use the JSRCC and VCU parking garages on 8th Street can gain access to the entrances from Jackson Street.                                                       

Floodwall testing continues

A reminder that the City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities will be performing its annual floodwall testing.  The following is a schedule of the dates and locations along the floodwall that testing will occur: 

  • June 14th  – Dock St. (Update:  Dock Street from 15th Street to 21st Street will be closed beginning at 9 a.m.  to 2 p.m.  Motorists may use either Main Street or Cary Street as an alternate route.)
  • June 15th  – 21st & Cary St.
  • June 16th  – Norfolk Southern
  • June 17th  – CSX

During this time, motorists will be detoured to the 9th Street Bridge.  Barricades and signs will be posted to alert motorists.
